Rural Outreach to Umnugovi and Dundgovi

(Монгол хэлээр унших бол энд дарна уу)

Since the founding of the association, MASA has always strived for equal opportunity and education for all in Mongolia. As this is one of the core missions, MASA realized that more opportunities were seized by people in the city than those in rural parts of Mongolia. One factor that we saw that could be fixed was the lack of information reaching rural parts of Mongolia.

In an effort to battle this issue, MASA has been implementing the Rural Outreach Program every year. However, in 2021 due to the Covid Pandemic implementing the program proved to be impossible. So we were able to continue the program in 2022. In the past month and a half, MASA went on three trips to 6 provinces in Mongolia. In efforts to reach at least 1000 students each outreach trip.

MASA and EducationUSA Mongolia's Rural Outreach Program team traveled to rural parts of Mongolia and held events for high school students in cooperation with the U.S Embassy in Mongolia and Spirit of America.  At each outreach trip, MASA Board Members volunteer at these events to talk about their journey in choosing their major and the experience they studied in the U.S. Volunteers talked to help students understand the importance of choosing their majors for college. In some, the talk may resonate with the student's current situation and be a guide to their future. On every trip, volunteers are always alumni of U.S. federal scholarship programs. In volunteer talks, students also learnt about the different federal scholarship programs that provide full scholarships, stipends, and are free to apply to. (If you wish to learn about these scholarship programs, please click here).

MASA has been implementing EducationUSA Mongolia since 2020, and through that MASA provides the students a brief understanding of the 5 steps to studying in the U.S. and explanation of all the free services EducationUSA Mongolia provides to everyone in Mongolia, such as individual advising, participating in our three-week short programs, listening to our podcast and reading our alumni story, and many more.

Beforehand MASA prepared handout packages with information about EducationUSA Mongolia activities, U.S. Embassy Scholarships, and U.S. college application process as well as career choice tests. The packages included a brochure on EducationUSA Mongolia activities, handouts on MASA activities, commonly asked questions and their answers, and U.S. Embassy scholarships, bookmarks with U.S. college information, and stickers.

The first 2022 Rural Outreach trip was to Umnugovi and Dundgovi. In Mandalgovi City in Dundgovi Province, MASA presented to 250 students at an event hall. Then did two more events at Mandal School and Erdmiin Dalai Complex School, which had 125 students attend at each event. In Dalanzadgad City, Umnugovi Province, MASA and EducationUSA Mongolia held events at #4 School and #5 School. #5 School had about 120 students attend the event and #4 School had about 30 students attend the event. As the first two events were during school hours, a big event in after school hours were held for all students in Dalanzadgad and that event had more than 300 students in attendance. At the end of each event, state alumni volunteers and EducationUSA Mongolia advisers gave individual advising to students. The trip concluded with 6 events, which had reached over 1000 high school students within 4 days.
